That the incredibly awesomely named Predators, or Twins, Conans? Fox Creek is named for some AHNALD! Movie, anyway, that they won wasn't a surprise, the teams seemed evenly matched, but the 44-6 score was. Once I read an account of the game, though, the reasons that the game turned into a rout became clear. McCormick went into the game without their starting quarterback then lost stud hoss running back Mateao Durant on the game's first play. When you lose the absolute centerpiece of your offense, you not only lose your scoring punch you also lose the ability to extend drives and keep the opposing offense off the field. McCormick was coming on strong late in the season, so hopefully they'll be healthy in time for the playoffs where they could make a nice run in the little Class A bracket. Is 513 rushing yards good? I have a big book somewhere in my office that details what sorts of sports achievements qualify as being "good." I'll try to find it later, but let's assume for right now that 513 is "good." That's what Green Sea Floyds threw up on Friday night. Henry Moody ran for 164, Wyatt Upchurch had 138 yards and Anthony Wilson just kind of showed off, running for 72 yards and two touchdowns ON THREE FLIPPIN' CARRIES! GSF started the year 2-0, but then dropped six straight, so Friday's win was big and gives them a chance to finish the regular season on a high note. I guess it evaded my notice somehow, but Denmark-Olar has been on a roll for about a month now. I went to a game at Denmark-Olar once...there were dragon flies and mosquitoes so large, a guy with glow sticks had to guide them in for landing on a runway. Them skeeters was so big they could stand flat footed behind a turkey...you know what, I don't need to use every analogy for every example. They were big, OK? Anyway, after starting the year 0-4, D-O has won four-of-five games. The first three wins came against teams with three wins combined, which may be why I paid them so little mind. They gave Allendale-Fairfax a really good game, though, then up and beat previously ranked Estill 6-0. Good old 6-0 games remind me of a bygone era when coaches dressed in suits smoking Luckies derided players for asking out of games with sucking head wounds. "Lemme tell ya something J.W., no kind of man abandons his guard spot in the straight T because of blood loss and blurred vision." I'm ridiculous and easily distracted, you may have noticed. Anyway, quarterback Rico Parker tossed the winning touchdown pass with two minutes left. A great effort...and the Vikings can prove just how improved they are this week against unbeaten Bamberg-Ehrhardt. Quick Hits-Having seen Lamar in person now, I'm starting to think both of your Class A state champions might come from Region III. They aren't especially deep, most schools with under 300 students really can't be, but they have good size up front and incredible speed in the backfield. Tre Ceasar is every bit as good as advertized, but I didn't realize what kind of wheels Decobie Durant had. He got the corner on a keeper and looked like he had on rockets and roller skates...Lewisville's Trey Keels completed his first 11 passes against C.A. Johnson and Calhoun County's Terrance Brunson was 18-of-21 against North. Where is that dang "good" book?...I'm very please that Whitmire broke out of the four-game losing streak they entered right after I wrote a story about them. Maybe coaches will return my phone calls and put my name in their phone instead of "super jinxy guy, don't answer"...Big congrats to C.E. Murray for enduring a month off because of flooding, then returning to win two games in four days to go to 7-1 on the year. Suggested reading Fox Creek rolled McCormick in a big region showdown, partly because McCormick was all hurted and whatnot. Seriously Class A coaches, lets talk and do some stories...the whole Class A Jenkins jinx is no more. You can read about a couple of Class A games here, including Calhoun County's win. Or you can choose not to. Who am I to give orders to a person of your stature? Cross gave Lincoln quite a seeing to. Lewisville beat C.A. Johnson and Great Falls fell to Lamar, but read those stories at your own risk. Guy that wrote them is a complete hack. Apparently, Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Lake View are still good. Go figure.
